CCC 2018 Invitation Letter

Dear Friends:

You are cordially invited to participate in the 25th Consortium for Competitiveness and Cooperation (CCC) conference to be held at The University of California at Berkeley. The Community Day will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the CCC and take place during the full day of Friday March 2, 2018. The Doctoral Student Consortium activities will begin on Saturday, March 3rd in the morning, and conclude at noon on Sunday, March 4th .

The CCC offers doctoral students an opportunity to present research-in-progress and receive guidance and commentary from faculty associated with research-oriented institutions such as Bocconi University, Boston University, University of California (Berkeley and Los Angeles), Carnegie Mellon, Copenhagen Business School, Columbia, Duke, Emory, EPFL, Harvard, Illinois, Maryland, MIT, Michigan, NYU, Northwestern, Stanford, University of Toronto, and the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton), among others. Faculty and student interests typically center on questions of organization and economic theory, technology management and firm strategy, entrepreneurship, and the co-evolution of industrial structure, organizational structure, and innovation.  Past presentations have discussed firm capabilities, management of innovation, competition and cooperation among firms, technological change and variation within industries, diffusion of knowledge, firm survival and failure, commercialization of university research, and the broader institutional structures and policies that influence firm behavior.

We welcome nomination of outstanding students from your doctoral program.  We anticipate receiving more nominations of students than we can accommodate on the program, so priority will be given to students whose research questions are aligned with the themes central to CCC.  Nominated students should have defended their thesis proposal, but not yet entered the job-market. The ideal timing for a CCC presentation is when the ideas are sufficiently well formulated for a clear presentation of basic questions and predictions, but can also benefit from incorporation of comments received at the Consortium for significant revision.  Please do not nominate students who have already presented at CCC in a prior year.

Please submit one set of ranked student nominations per institution. This coordination among faculty within the institution will greatly facilitate the CCC student selection process by the organizing committee. The following information is requested in your institution’s nomination of students:

  • A rank ordering of your nominees (if your institution nominates more than one)
  • Student(s) name and email address
  • Advisor’s name and email address
  • The doctoral program stage reached by student(s)
  • A one to two page abstract or short overview of dissertation research by the student(s)

We hope that you and your student(s) will be able to participate in this year’s Consortium. Before the deadline of December 15, 2017, please follow these links for faculty registration and student nomination, also available on the CCC website at https://ccc-community.org/. Please note that we are balancing the needs of maintaining the “small conference feel” and tight budgetary constraints of CCC with its ever-growing intellectual base of scholars. Accordingly, we anticipate an excess demand in faculty attendance. Thus, we encourage you to register and confirm your attendance as early as you can, but certainly before the deadline.

Thanks to the financial support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation as well as The Institute for Business Innovation at Berkeley-Haas at the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business, we will provide meals during the conference, and hotel accommodations for all the doctoral students. For attending faculty, we request that you cover your own hotel accommodations at the special Berkeley rate.  However, we don’t want financial constraints to preclude your participation, so please let us know if you require support. All participants attending the conference are responsible for their own transportation costs to and from Berkeley.
